Archery in Schools, Colleges & Universities

What We Offer

Experience Archery runs archery in schools, colleges & universities. Our archery sessions are suitable for primary age children right up to young people at university. Our programmes are for year 4 and upwards.

We can provide one-off taster sessions for a full or half day of archery at your venue, or can design an age appropriate programme to fit into termly or half-termly PE modules or on-going after school clubs. We can also offer archery courses during the school holidays.

If your school has suitable facilities, (hall or field) we can come to you. Prior to running any sessions at your venue, an instructor will assess the spaces suitability and do a full risk assessment and also discuss your requirements and any specific needs of participants.

Alternatively Why Not Come to Us?

Our main indoor venue is in Archway North London.

Social and Life Skills

Archery has many transferable skills which can be linked in with Citizenship lessons or Life Skills and Personal Development programmes. Some of the skills archery promotes include: self-discipline, mental arithmetic, staying calm under pressure, cooperation, following instructions, working individually and as part of a team.

In order to take part in an archery session, students must adhere to strict safety guidelines, which encourage personal responsibility and consideration of the safety of others. Furthermore, involvement in active, structured activities with tangible outcomes has been shown to promote self-esteem and emotional well-being in short-term and longer-term projects.

Structure of Sessions

Our sessions can be self-contained or part of a longer term programme depending on your requirements. Sessions are designed to be educational and fun, and generally last between 50 mins – 1.5 hours.

A typical first session runs as follows:

  • Sessions begin with a full safety briefing and providing equipment to each participant
  • Demonstration of correct shooting technique
  • Individual guidance to support each participant to shoot safely
  • Group shooting
  • Archery shooting games and introduction to scoring
  • Finish off with a fun light hearted competition

Awards

On-going programmes work towards developing greater technique and understanding of archery. Students can work towards gaining specific awards through the World Archery or Archery GB Beginner Award Programmes.

Our Coaches

Leander Pittis

Leander Pittis

Founded Experience Archery in 2009 as there was a shortage of year round indoor shooting opportunities for children and adults in London. He is an Archery GB level 2 Coach and also a NCF Crossbow instructor. He has been coaching for over 14 years and shooting Olympic recurve for over 17 years. Leander has won numerous local and county competitions including Middlesex and Bedfordshire indoor championships. He started his archery journey while working as an actor and has used his shooting skills in various films, adverts and promotional events. Leander coaches more than shoots these days and enjoys teaching beginners as well as working with more experienced archers.

Phil Darkin

Phil Darkin

Is an Archery GB level 1 Session Coach. Phil mainly shoots Barebow recurve, but also shoots a traditional Flat Bow too. He shoots target and field archery at his club in south London but enjoys sharing his knowledge running beginner courses, have a go taster sessions and parties for children and adults with Experience Archery.

Joe Ellul

Joe Ellul

Joe has been passionate about archery for the past eight years, developing his skills and deepening his love for the sport with every arrow he’s loosed. Wanting to give something back to the archery community, he decided to train as a coach, earning his Archery GB Level 1 qualification. For the past two years, he has been sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm by teaching with us, helping new archers discover the joy and discipline of the sport.

Joe enjoys shooting a wide range of bows at his club in East London, including the English longbow, compound bow, and a horse bow. Each offers its own unique challenge and feel, but his true passion lies with the English longbow. He even makes his own arrows by hand, using traditional techniques that connect him to the long history of archery.
